For children and young adults aged 6 to 18 who are at least one year behind in reading achievement. Under the direction of a certified teacher, trained tutors work one-to-one using the Barton Reading & Spelling Program (based on the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory reading & spelling method) to develop the student’s reading and spelling skills. The Barton Program is a researched and evidence based, Orton-Gillingham influenced, multi-sensory, systematic phonics program that allows children to improve their reading and spelling through explicit instruction about: phonics, common spelling patterns, and sound-symbol practice. Mastery is a requirement at each level of the Barton program before moving on to new information. Progress is monitored and reported regularly. Our tutors include dedicated and experienced Teachers, Early Childhood Educators, ELL teachers, and Resource Teachers.

FAQ
Q: What is it?
A: Click here to watch the Barton Intro Video.
Q: What does a Barton tutoring session look like?
A: Click here for a demo.
Q: How long will it take?
A: No two people with dyslexia learn at exactly the same pace, so Barton can only provide an estimate.
If a student has classic, moderate dyslexia, and is tutored twice a week in a one-on-one setting, for an hour each time, it will take 2 to 3 years to complete all ten levels of the Barton System. After those 2 to 3 years, a formerly struggling student will read well and spell competently at the mid-ninth grade level.
Students with mild dyslexia often complete the system a bit sooner, while students with more severe dyslexia may need 4 to 5 years.
A student can make faster progress if tutored more often. A child tutored 3 or 4 times a week will progress much faster than one who only gets tutoring twice a week.
Q: What is taught in every lesson?
A: Click here for the Barton Scope and Sequence.
Q: Does a student have to start at level 1?
A: Most students need to start at Level 1 – no matter how old they are. That’s because research proves that a lack of phonemic awareness is what is preventing them from being able to read unknown words by sounding them out – and to spell by sounding out. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate each sound in a word – in your head, without letters.
In fact, research shows there are seven essential phonemic awareness skills a student must have before letters will start to make sense. The Barton program teach all seven of those skills in Level 1.
Q: Why does the Barton program use nonsense words?
A: In order to be able to read and spell multi-syllable words, a student must be able to easily read and spell any one-syllable word – whether they’ve seen it before or not.
That’s because each syllable in a multi-syllable word looks like a nonsense word. So only when students become fast, accurate, and comfortable reading nonsense words, will they master reading and spelling multi-syllable words.
A: There are no more rules to teach. At that point, the student can read anything – even college textbooks. In our society today, adult reading level is ninth-grade level.
