The next information session for the fall 2010 program will held on Wednesday, September 8th or Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 7 pm in the LDAFS Resource Centre, Suite 201-13766 - 72 Avenue, Surrey (2nd floor above Coast Capital Savings Credit Union in Newton). You do not need to pre-register for this session and can attend either evening.

LDAFS offers an after-school tutoring program for students aged 7 to 14 who are having difficulty with reading, comprehension, spelling and/or writing. Adult volunteers (18+) work one to one with a child following a research-based literacy program developed for children with learning disabilities. Tutors work in a classroom setting with 4-6 other tutors under the supervision of a certified, special education teacher.
Shifts: Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs; 4-6 pm or 6-8 pm. Tutors are assigned two students; one for each hour. The fall 2010 program runs for 11 weeks from October 4 to December 16. 2010. The location for tutoring is Janice Churchill Elementary, 8226 - 146 Street in Surrey.

Training: Prospective volunteers attend an information session, personal interview with teacher and upon acceptance must participate in 24 hours of training; on-going mentorship is provided during tutoring. Training dates for the fall 2010 program are Saturdays, September, 18, 25 and October 2, 2010 from 9 am to 4 pm. A half day inservice will be held on Saturday, October 23rd from 9 am to 12 pm. Training is held at the Surrey Conference Centre.

Skills and Experience required: Excellent English skills are essential (speaking, reading and writing); must enjoy reading and sharing your love of books with children, must be patient, caring, encouraging, reliable, punctual, dedicated, previous experience in a teaching environment or working with children an asset. Personal interview and criminal record check required. Use of own vehicle helpful as tutoring location not on direct bus route.

Benefits to Volunteer: Fulfill volunteer hours required for university or college, valuable work experience with children, letter of reference and certificate on completion, recognition luncheon and small gift. This is a rewarding, responsible volunteer position, and valuable work experience for anyone considering working with children.
